VANLOVE FEST 25 GET TO KNOW: ALEX FROOD

In our ‘Vanlove Fest 25: Get To Know’ blog series, we’re giving you the chance to learn more about the incredible individuals who come to share their passions, skills, and stories through workshops and discussions across the festival weekend.

We've asked our workshop hosts and speakers a few questions to help you find out what drives them, what they'll be sharing, and why they can't wait to be part of Vanlove Fest 25.

This week, it’s the turn of the ultimate off-grid explorer, Mr Adventure himself, Mr Alex Frood!

Who are you, and what do you do?

My Name is Alex Frood, I’m Scot with a southern English accent and a few weird northern words thrown in. I’ve worked as an professional expedition leader all over the globe, I’m a professional YouTuber and I design electrical systems for Roamer Batteries.

What first sparked your love for vanlife / life on the road?

The freedom to adventure it’s offered me. Starting from a night wild camping in Scotland to now winters in the Arctic. It’s also made financial and logical sense. With my overseas work I would spend months of my year overseas. Seems silly to pay for a house I wasn’t ever in!

What can people expect from your session at Vanlove Fest?

I’m going to share my knowledge as a professional expedition leader working in extreme environments, combined with my skill set for vehicle-based travel. My aim is to inspire and inform how anyone can enjoy the Arctic winter in a safe and responsible manner with the right preparation.

Describe your dream van in 3 words.

Functional, Technical, Practical

What’s one vanlife myth you’d love to bust?

Circumstances for someone to get into “Vanlife” doesn’t matter, nor does one reason make someone a truer Vanlifer than someone else.

What’s your go-to comfort ritual on the road?

Put the Diesel heater on!

What does ‘Vanlove’ mean to you?

It’s the love for a vehicle, not just for what it is, but for where it can take you, physically or metaphorically.

Where can people follow your journey or connect with you online?

“Mispronounced Adventures” is the name of my social handles on YouTube and Instagram. I am extremely dyslexic, which usually results in me often mispronouncing many of the places I travel to. I once saw it as a major weakness of mine and a source of embarrassment and shame. Now I see it as just a core part of who I am. How best to learn how to pronounce a place? Go there and find out ( or look at my YouTube comment section ).

Join Alex live on Saturday on our brand new Adventure Zone stage, where he’ll be sharing his insights on how to safely enjoy winter vanlife in the Arctic.
